The transport railcars of series 5046 have been constructive from the remote railcar series 5045 of the ÖBB derived "Blue Lightning" to also be able to perform as with the steam traction in regional transport more economical operation.

The drive motor, fluid transmission, bogies and many other parts had been taken over from the 5045 and 5145 series, only the axle ratio was changed, as the maximum speed was only 100 km / h. The railcars received a steam generation system for heating the railcar and up to three four-axle trailer cars.

The vehicles mainly provided local transport services on non-electrified routes in Lower Austria . As the vehicles proved their worth in operation, eight further, slightly modified vehicles were ordered from 1959–1961 as the 5146 series . The engines of the 5146 were set to a slightly higher engine output, the passenger compartment was one window section larger, the entry and luggage compartments slightly smaller. The passenger compartment was heated using Webasto devices. The steam boiler was initially available to heat the sidecar and was only removed later.

Some vehicles were later added to the Raab-Oedenburg-Ebenfurter Eisenbahn . When the new 5047 series appeared in 1987, the outdated railcars were gradually replaced by these. In 1997 the last car was taken out of service. Some vehicles have been preserved.

technical features

In principle, the railcars consist of the same components as the blue lightning. The specified technical data correspond to the 5046 series . The series 5146 had the higher engine output of 397 kW, which was achieved by the higher speed of 1395 / min. Some small dimensions such as service dimensions, wheel diameter also changed in this series. Externally, too, the vehicles resembled the 5145, only the raised roof could be saved by lowering the radiator, and the head shape was also adapted to local traffic.

The drive motor was located in driver's cab 1, and the boiler was installed in driver's cab 2. In the beginning, the locomotive staff tried to control the vehicle from driver's cab 1 in order to better perceive faults in the engine. Because of the noise, the driver's cab on the non-engine side was later preferred and therefore the railcars in train operation with sidecars or control cars were grouped accordingly in the train formation. The vehicles had multiple controls for two motor vehicles. A railcar, consisting of two railcars and four trailer cars, could therefore be controlled by one driver alone.

The passenger compartment of the 5046 series was originally provided with full windows. The 5146 series was instead equipped with VMW half-windows . Initially, the heating of the passenger compartment in the 5046 series consisted of steam heating , the 5146 series already had the passenger compartment heating with Webasto devices. Since this heating had a greater energy requirement, the vehicles had to be equipped with an additional alternator.
