The Austrian Federal Association for Learning, Thinking and Memory Training and Multimodal Biography-Oriented Activation ( ÖBV-GT ) is an association based in Austria .

The office of the Salzburg provincial government and the Salzburg educational institute brought the training to become a memory trainer after the Viennese doctor Franziska Stengel to Salzburg in autumn 1995 . Stengel recognized the importance of regular mental training as early as the 1950s and can be described as a pioneer of memory training . Her book "Training Memory Playing" was published in the 1970s and met with great interest in the professional world. Even at that time she had very modern views, which are still confirmed today by the findings of modern brain research .

On October 4th, 1997 the 1st General Assembly of the “Austrian Federal Association for Memory Training after Dr. med. Stengel ”, attended by 18 founding members. In 1998 the first training and further education offers for trainers started. In 2000 the name was changed to “Austrian Federal Association for Memory Training” in order to be able to offer a broader methodology. Since then, the ÖBV-GT has provided a platform for currently around 400 trainers who work with a wide variety of target groups.

Foundation of the European umbrella organization for memory training (EUVGT)

On November 25, 2011, the board of the Austrian Federal Association for Memory Training signed the founding document of the European umbrella association for memory training (EUVGT) together with the German and Swiss federal associations. This newly founded umbrella organization sees itself as an initiative for structure and quality in learning, thinking and memory training in Europe. At the European level, a platform is to be created that promotes sensitization and awareness-raising for mental fitness in the population. The chairmanship of the European umbrella organization is made up of one representative each from the Austrian, German and Swiss federal associations. At the 1st general meeting of the EUVGT on April 21, 2012, the chairwoman of the ÖBV-GT was elected 1st chairman of the EUVGT board.

Brainweek - The international week of the brain

In 1950, Charles A. Dana founded the Dana Foundation in the USA, a not-for-profit philanthropic organization based in New York. The organization currently has around 300 members: neuroscientists and brain researchers, including 10 Nobel Prize winners. The aim of the Dana Foundation is to promote neuroscience, to support research projects in this area financially and to inform the general public about the research results. The European Dana Alliance for the Brain (EDAB) was founded in 1997.

Brain Week is held every March by these two organizations together with many partners and takes place in more than 65 countries. Interested laypeople can find out about new research results in panel discussions, exhibitions, lectures and the associations for memory training and actively participate in many activities.

In Austria, the ÖBV-GT started activities related to the brain for the first time in Salzburg in 2011 and has been offering interested visitors insights into how the brain works as part of the Austrian Brainweek since 2012 . In addition to specialist lectures, visitors can find out more about the possibilities of training in a personal conversation with the trainers and try out various techniques themselves.

Trainer training at ÖBV-GT

In addition to the basic training to become a memory trainer (trainer training for adult education and health care), there is the option of completing additional qualifications in the areas of care and nursing for the elderly, children and young people, as well as business and tourism. Further training courses for trainers are also regularly offered on special topics.
