The Öküz Mehmet Paşa Kervansarayı (German Öküz-Mehmed-Pascha-Caravanserai ; Ottoman اوکز محمد پاشا کاروانسرای, Öküz Mehmet Pâşâ Kârvânserây ) is a caravanserai in the Turkish city of Kuşadası . The building was built at the beginning of the 17th century by the Ottoman Grand Vizier Öküz Mehmed Pascha . After extensive renovation, the building is now used as a hotel, restaurant and bazaar .

location

The old caravanserai is located directly at the port of the city on the corner of Ataturk Bulvarı / Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa Bulvarı.

history

The caravanserai was built on behalf of the former Grand Vizier Öküz Mehmed Pascha, who as governor of Eyâlet Aydın wanted to boost trade in the region. The building was built in the style of a fortress and served as a goods depot and customs warehouse.

The General Directorate for Foundations restored the largely destroyed caravanserai between 1954 and 1966. The cost was more than 2.1 million Turkish lira, plus the cost of nationalization and the demolition of barracks on three sides of the building.

architecture

View of an outer wall made of rubble stones

The caravanserai is a two-story building with thick walls made of rubble stones. In the center of the rectangular building is an inner courtyard with an area of 28.5 × 21.5 meters. The outer walls form a base area of 43.63 × 51 meters. The rooms are made of bricks with an edge length of 24 × 36 centimeters. The exterior is reminiscent of a citadel , with the outer walls being crowned by a battlement with battlements . The marble-lined and vaulted main entrance is to the north with a view of the sea. Two wall niches in the passage of the main gate visually enlarge it. The other entrance, also lined with marble and designed in a similar size to the main entrance, opens directly to the east to the town's market square.

Inner courtyard with stoa

The large inner courtyard is surrounded by a stoa that leads to the individual rooms. The corner rooms can be reached via a diagonal passage. On the ground floor there are 28 rooms that have a window next to their door overlooking the inner courtyard. You enter the rooms via a small step. The fireplace is in the partition walls of the rooms and is flanked by two small cupboards.

There are stairs in the northwest and southeast corners that lead from the courtyard to the first floor. The stairs to the right of the main entrance have 19 steps, while the stairs to the left of the market entrance have 21 steps.

The rooms on the first floor can be reached via a stoa. The rooms each have a window with a view of the caravanserai. Wooden planks serve as window and door lintels. The fireplace is located in the wall facing the inner courtyard, as the room-dividing walls on this level contain the chimneys of the fireplace of the rooms on the ground floor. There is a closet to the left of the fireplace. The room above the main entrance is larger than the others and also has a larger window than the others. A narrow staircase, hidden in the wall in the right niche, leads to the terrace. According to historical records, this room was reserved for the customs commissioner.

On the roof behind the battlements there is a 90 cm wide corridor. The battlements were designed so that hot oil could be poured on the enemy. Great importance is attached to the northwest and northeast walls of the caravanserai with a view to attack from the sea. The battlements on the northeast corner are higher and give the impression of a watchtower. The entablature is 10.6 m high inside the structure, while the outside height of the building is 12.63 m.

The caravanserai has been restored several times in history, the last time in 1995/96.

hotel

First floor

One of the most prominent guests is US President Jimmy Carter , who stayed here on the occasion of his visit to the ancient sites of Ephesus . The hotel is also known for a meeting between the Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos A. Papandreou and his Turkish colleague İsmail Cem .

There is also a small bazaar on the southwest corner .
