The wayside shrine in the vineyards

The Ölbergbildstock in Fahr am Main is one of the many pictorial martens in the Volkach district. It is located halfway between Volkach and Fahr, directly on Kreisstraße 34.

history

The wayside shrine was erected on September 14, 1626. The founders were Christoph Schimmel and his wife Dorothea. Their names are also noted on an inscription around the column: "CHRISDOFEL SCHIMEL VND DOROTEA MEIN HAUSFRAVW HAWEN ZVM GETEGTNVS DISEN PILSTOG AVF RICHTEN".

Another inscription on the back refers to the foundation : “SEPTEMBR 14, 1626 YEAR IT HAS BEEN VFGEICHTEN DIS MARTERBILT ALSO IN DISEM IAR DAMAGED MOUNTAIN VND VALLEY TO WINE AND GRAIN IN FRANCKENLAND VBERAL DVRCH FROST VND KELT IN PFISTER REMEMBER ME ALSO VND HAS ARM 12 R VMP THE MALTER KORN MVSEN GEPEN THE BIG THEVRVNG VND HVNGERS NOT HAS BEEN THAT EVERY FROME CHRISTIAN HAS EXPERIENCED “. The wayside shrine is intended to protect against crop failure and famine. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the wayside shrine under the number D-6-75-174-252.

description

The wayside shrine can be assigned to the early Renaissance . Only the pyramid-shaped roof and the lily-shaped finials of the column point to the post-Gothic style. On the column there are several engravings, a coat of arms and the monogram "CS" as an abbreviation of the founder name Christoph Schimmel. A decorative ribbon and shell-shaped ends on the sides lead over to the picture panel.

The scene of the Mount of Olives is depicted on the front of the wayside shrine. Jesus kneels and prays while an angel appears to him. There are three sleeping disciples on the right. On the sides there are cartridges of the founders with the names "Dorodea" and "Christoffel". St. Dorothea holds a fruit basket and a rose branch in her hands. Christoph carries the baby Jesus over a river and has the globe in his hand. The reverse bears the foundation's inscription.
