Greenpoint oil spill
The oil spill from Green Point is an environmental damage in New York City . The industrial pollution is due to the operation of oil refineries .
The affected area is in Greenpoint , a borough in northern Brooklyn . As an adjacent surface water , Newtown Creek is also affected.
The operation of oil refineries goes back to the 19th century.
On October 5, 1950, a plant exploded. It is believed that a significant amount of oil was released from a tank during this event in particular. It is estimated at 17 million gallons of oil.
During an overflight, a Coast Guard helicopter pilot noticed an oil slick on Newtown Creek on September 29, 1978 . The oil leaked from a bank fortification on Meeker Avenue .
