The Austrian Central Library for Physics & Chemistry Departmental Library is Austria's largest scientific library for physics and peripheral areas. It is located in spatial association with the Faculty of Physics at the University of Vienna in Boltzmanngasse in Alsergrund (9th district).

history

The history of the Austrian Central Library for Physics goes back to the 19th century. The first acquisition of physical literature was made in 1850 by Christian Doppler , the first director of the kk  Physikalisches Institut at the University of Vienna , which was founded in 1850 . But the holdings of the Physico-Chemical Laboratory headed by Josef Loschmidt as well as some individual works from the early days of the Physikalisches Cabinet and journals from later years have been preserved. When the physical institutes of the University of Vienna were reorganized in 1920, the libraries of the three institutes were combined into one central library, which was administered by a library commission consisting of the institute's executive boards.

On January 1, 1946, Robert Chorherr founded the central library of the physical institutes of the University of Vienna. The Central Library for Physics in Vienna was then established with effect from January 1, 1980 as the first inter-university, special university facility according to the University Organization Act 1975 (UOG 1975). In 2000 the legal basis of the library was brought into line with the provisions of the University Organization Act 1993 (UOG 1993) and the name was changed to “Austrian Central Library for Physics”. Since January 1st 2004 the library has been part of the University Library of the University of Vienna . From 1977 to 2007 the Austrian Central Library for Physics was headed by Wolfgang Kerber . In 2008 Brigitte Kromp took over the management of the library. In 2012 the Austrian Central Library for Physics was merged with the Department of Chemistry at the University of Vienna to form the Austrian Central Library for Physics and the Department of Chemistry.

tasks

The Austrian Central Library for Physics is responsible for the procurement, indexing and provision of literature and other information carriers in the field of physics and its border areas as completely as possible. Special importance is attached to literature that is difficult to obtain (conference reports, reports, preprints, dissertations, etc.). The library ensures the technical supply of literature for university research and teaching, industry and the interested public. It is also the “Depository Library” for the reports of the United States Atomic Energy Commission (United States Department of Energy) and for the microfiche collection of the International Nuclear Information System (INIS) and the regional information center for publications of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP) ).

Duration

Around 1.5 million bibliographic units, 350,000 volumes of books and journals, dissertations and the like, approx. 1 million other information carriers ( AV media such as image and sound carriers, microfilms, microfiches, etc.), 2,914 magazine titles (as of 31 December 2006), including 322 journals (as of December 31, 2006)
