Austrian bookstore award

The Austrian Bookstore Award is a prize awarded by the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria . The partner of the award is the main association of the Austrian book trade .

The bookstore award, which was created in 2017, has been awarded annually since then. The award as the best bookstore of the year is intended to recognize the development of innovative business models or the continuation of business activities to maintain a comprehensive book trade landscape, even in times of growing online trade.

The prize is endowed with a total of 50,000 euros. Five prizes of 10,000 euros each will be awarded. In addition, the award winners will be given a seal of approval for the purpose of increased attention and public image.

Selection process

Bookshops that are based in Austria, are owner-managed and independent, offer a literary range or a cultural event program and pursue innovative business models or are committed to promoting reading and literature can apply.

The decision on the award of the Austrian Bookstore Award is made by an independent expert jury made up of authors, publishers, journalists and publishing house representatives.

Eva Rossmann , Helga Schuster, Norbert Mayer , Roswitha Wonka and Thomas Rittig were selected for 2017 .

On April 5, 2017, the prize was awarded to the following five bookstores for the first time:

  • Bookstore ALEX, Linz
  • Hartlieb's books ( Petra Hartlieb ), Vienna
  • Leporello bookstore, Vienna
  • Bookstore Plautz, Gleisdorf
  • Liber Wiederin, Innsbruck

On April 25, 2018, the following bookstores received the Austrian Bookstore Award 2018:

  • Alexowsky bookstore, Groß-Enzersdorf
  • Haymon bookstore, Innsbruck
  • Heyn bookstore, Klagenfurt
  • Seeseiten bookstore, Vienna
  • Bookstore Stark, Gmünd

On April 25, 2019, the award was given to the following bookstores:

  • Buchkontor, Vienna
  • Book sailor, Graz
  • Book café in the Lippott House, Kufstein
  • Fürstelberger bookstore, Linz
  • Bookstore Neudorfer, Vöcklabruck

  • Lerchenfeld bookstore, Vienna
  • Löwenherz bookstore, Vienna
  • Wirthmiller bookstore, Saalfelden
  • Wagner'sche Universitätsbuchhandlung Medici, Innsbruck
