Vadsøya , more Stora Vadsøya is an island in the municipality Vadsø in Norwegian Fylke Troms og Finnmark . Vadsøya is located in front of the center of Vadsø and has given the city its name.
The “Vadsøya Kulturpark” is located on the island . This is where the first urban structure from the 1500s is located. There are still traces of the cemetery around a wooden church that existed at the time. In the 1700s and 1800s the cemetery was used for Russian merchants and sailors and was therefore referred to as the "Russian cemetery" ( Norwegian russekirkegården ).
The airship mast to which the airships “ Norge ” (1926) and “ Italia ” (1928) are moored is in the Kulturpark .
There are also remains of the fortifications from the time of the German occupation in World War II . Around Vadsø were several smaller positions that served as part of the defense line along the Varangerfjord . Here are the remains of gun emplacements, bunkers and trenches.
The island is connected to the main town by a bridge. The Hurtigruten landing stage is on the island .
