Austrian Congress of Women Journalists 2017

The Austrian journalists Congress is an annual gathering of representatives of the communications industry in Austria , working for the advancement of women in media use appointed and offer them a platform for networking.

Under the general theme of the glass ceiling , the congress was launched in 1998 as an initiative by Maria Schaumayer , Maria Rauch-Kallats and the Federation of Industrialists and has since taken place once a year in the House of Industry in Vienna . It regularly counts around 300–400 visitors. Since the 15th Congress on November 5, 2013, the conference has been held annually under the leadership of a new team.

According to tradition, the Austrian Congress of Women Journalists awards the Media Lion's Media Prize (own MedienLÖWIN ) every year on the evening before, to honor representatives of the media industry.

development

The starting point when the congress was founded in 1998 was that women in media companies (newspapers, magazines, TV and radio) were rarely to be found in top positions. Apart from the formats specially designed for women, there was not a single female head of department in Austria's media industry at the end of the 20th century. As a result, the congress, particularly in the first few years, was particularly dedicated to the topics of careers and women in management positions.

In the meantime, the congress no longer deals exclusively with women-specific issues, but is also devoted to general and globally applicable media policy problems. This can also be traced back to the progress made by women who have since achieved leadership positions in media companies and professional successes in various media formats. In this respect, the development of the congress seems to reflect the general developments in the communications industry.

Over the years, the congress has been expanded to include national and international speakers who give lectures and workshops. The contents are recorded as congress documentation and made freely available in the archive. The experts recorded in the database are recommended by the women’s networks and journalists involved, with the aim of enabling close networking with other women’s networks, training institutions in the media sector, media partners and gender officers.

procedure

The program follows a similar pattern every year. Accordingly, the greeting is followed by several presentations and lectures showing different perspectives and approaches to the problems associated with the main topic. This is followed by workshops in which the problem areas are worked on and discussed in smaller groups and solutions are discussed. Their results will be presented to the entire audience in a further program point, from which a conclusion will be drawn.
