The Austrian Horticultural Museum in the “Orangery Kagran ” in Vienna houses around 30,000 historical exhibits from the history of horticulture and allotment gardening in Austria.

history

The Austrian Horticultural Museum was founded in 1968/69. The original exhibits were a hodgepodge of tools and machines for horticulture that had been collected by teachers and students at the vocational school in the 1950s. A “Pharmacists' Exhibition Pavilion” built for the Vienna International Garden Show in 1974 was adapted after the end of the exhibition and opened in 1977 as the “Austrian Horticultural Museum” in Oberlaa.

Originally, the building on the grounds of the Kagran school garden was an orangery , later it served as a " vocational school for horticulture and floristry ". As the school became too small for the growing number of apprentices, the new vocational school was opened in 2001. Since 2003 the Art Nouveau building of the former Kagran Orangery with an exhibition area of 500 m² has served as a horticultural museum. A special feature is the detailed replica of the flower shop.

In 2001 the exhibits were incorporated into the “Sädtler Collection” (Austrian Museum of Flower Binding).

The adjoining school garden of the vocational school for horticulture and floristry is also used for open-air exhibitions, where, among other things, the “Rothschild Glass House”, a pavilion built for the World Exhibition in 1873 , a historic allotment garden hut from around 1918 and a light railroad were shown.

The "Association of Friends of the Austrian Horticultural Museum" supports the activities of the Horticultural Museum. The members consist of professionals who deal with garden art development, garden technology and the library. The organization of exhibitions is one of the main focuses of the association.

The museum's collection includes around 30,000 objects. The exhibits range from tools, gardening and horticultural equipment and vehicles to photographs and plans.
