Austrian Paralympic Committee (ÖPC)

The Austrian Paralympic Committee (abbreviation ÖPC) was founded in 1998 by Daniel Binter, the then disabled sports officer of AUVA and Secretary General of the Austrian Disabled Sports Association with the aim of enabling qualified athletes to participate in the Paralympic Games . Maria Rauch-Kallat has been President of the ÖPC since 2009 . The Secretary General is Petra Huber. Further board members of the ÖPC are Hermann Krist as Vice President and Brigitte Jank as Vice President.

The ÖPC is based in Vienna.

tasks

One of the tasks of the ÖPC is to promote competitive sports for athletes with physical, visual and mental impairments with a view to participating in the Paralympics. By raising financial resources, the ÖPC supports the sending of athletes to the Paralympics and coordinates and prepares participation in the Paralympics in cooperation with the Austrian Disabled Sports Association and the sports associations.

One of the concerns of the ÖPC is to arouse the interest and attention of the public in Paralympic Games in Austria and therefore it also supports the athletes in the media.

In addition, the ÖPC represents Austria's interests at congresses and meetings of the International Paralympic Committee and the European Paralympic Committee.

So far the athletes from Austria have won a total of 214 gold, 232 silver and 232 bronze medals at the Paralympic Games , 353 of them at the Summer Paralympics and 325 at the Winter Paralympics. The most successful Austrian at the Paralympics was Rosa Schweizer with 23 medals (including 16 gold medals), the most successful Austrian was Engelbert Rangger with a total of 12 medals.
