Új köztemető

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Új köztemető (German 'New General Cemetery') is one of the two main cemeteries of the Hungarian capital Budapest , along with the Kerepesi temető, and is located a little outside the center in Kozma út 8, in the Xth district ( Kőbánya ).

Personalities of Hungarian history such as Imre Nagy found their final resting place here.

After 1956, Imre Nagy and his colleagues were executed after the unsuccessful popular uprising and buried in a communal grave in "Parcel 301". On June 16, 1989, the 31st anniversary of the execution of Imre Nagy, he and his colleagues were rehabilitated by the Hungarian government and reburied in newly designed graves in the city cemetery. However, at Nagy's daughter's request, her father was not moved to another grave, but was buried again in plot 301.

To the north of the city cemetery are the New Jewish Cemetery and the Orthodox Jewish Cemetery (Kozma utca 6). The cemetery (since 1893) gives an impression of the design of the cemetery at the turn of the century . There you will find, among other things, the mausoleum for Sándor Schmidl . The building, built in the Hungarian Art Nouveau style , was designed by Ödön Lechner and Béla Lajta in 1902/1903. The facade cladding with turquoise tiles is typical of the style. The flower patterns, which were borrowed from Hungarian folk art, also bear witness to this.
