The Hardau development is a building complex in Zurich built between 1976 and 1978 . It comprises a total of four high-rise buildings with a maximum height of 95.4 meters. They shape the city's skyline to this day.

location

The development consists of a total of four residential high-rise buildings with 21 to 31 habitable floors, two four-story apartment blocks with five apartment buildings each, an old-age housing estate of the same height with a staff house and a retirement home. The properties in the development include 573 apartments, a kindergarten, various district facilities and commercial premises. The tallest residential tower, at 95.4 m, was the tallest building in the city of Zurich and Switzerland for a long time and is one of the tallest residential buildings in Switzerland.

It is located in the western part of Zurich in District 4 in the Hard district on Bullingerstrasse or Norastrasse. The Letzigrund sports stadium is located in the immediate vicinity to the west of the development.

history

The tall, brown-red residential towers with a square floor plan were built by the architect Max P. Kollbrunner between 1976 and 1978 as part of the first Swiss high-rise boom . The target group were older couples and individuals. Most of the 2½-room apartments were created accordingly. The housing shortage should be resolved with the settlement and parents with adult children who want to move and older people who want to stay in the neighborhood should be offered a smaller apartment.

The enthusiasm for high-rise buildings decreased more and more in the following years; the development became slumbersome because it was not attractive enough for families with children. An initiative accepted by the people in 1984 put a political end to high-rise construction in downtown Zurich.

From 2000, higher buildings were built in the area around the Hardau development. As the owner of the Hardau building, the city of Zurich combined a necessary renewal of the building technology with the creation of large apartments by merging small units. New kitchens, new colors and other adjustments upgraded the development between 2006 and 2007. Along with the general upgrading of the area, the reputation of the development that was attached to it also changed.
