The transition kriegslokomotive were simplified built variants of existing locomotive - series for use in the service of the Wehrmacht in World War II . Types that were further simplified and introduced later were called real war locomotives .

Transitional war locomotives

In World War II , the demand of locomotives , particularly freight train - locomotives , enormously. In order to accelerate the production of the standard series 44 , 50 and 86 , these series were delivered in a simplified form from 1941 and designated as transitional war locomotives (ÜK).

Characteristic for ÜK locomotives are z. B. Disc wheels on the running axles and missing front side windows in the cabs . In some cases , preheaters , feed pumps , front aprons , smoke deflectors and other components that are not absolutely necessary for operating the locomotives have been omitted.

War locomotives

The ÜK series turned out to be only an intermediate step. Because already in 1941 the demand for a further and even more radical structural simplification of the vehicles became more and more urgent. As real Kriegslokomotive (war steam locomotive KDL or war electric locomotive KEL) the steam locomotive series were 42 and 52 or electric locomotive series E 44 and E 94 by the German Railway designated. While the steam locomotives were actually developed for this special purpose during the war, the E 44 series had been in series production since 1932. Construction of the E 94 did not begin until the war in 1940, but the development also came from the prewar period.
