Ārons Bogoļubovs

Ārons Bogoļubovs (born December 30, 1938 in Leningrad ) is a former Soviet judoka who competed in the lightweight (up to 68 kg) in the 1960s. He won an Olympic bronze medal and two European championship titles in this weight class.

The 1.72 m tall athlete from Dinamo Riga won his first international title at the Open European Judo Championships in 1963 when he defeated the British Richard Bowen in the final , and in 1964 he won the final against the Austrian Karl Reisinger . In 1964 and 1965 he also won the European team championship with the Soviet team.

Judo was first part of the Olympic program at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo . At the Olympic competitions , 25 participants from 18 countries competed in the first competition, the lightweight. Bogoļubovs won his first three fights, in the semifinals he was defeated by the Swiss Eric Hänni . Together with his Soviet teammate Oleg Stepanow , Ārons Bogoļubovs received the first judo bronze medals behind the Japanese Olympic champions Takehide Nakatani and Eric Hänni. 1966 Bogoļubovs won again bronze at the European championships in light middleweight.

Soviet judo championships did not exist until 1973. But Ārons Bogoļubovs was the 1958, 1963 and 1964 Soviet lightweight champion in sambo , a Russian martial art with references to judo.
