The ČSD series M 286.0 (from 1988: series 850 ) are four-axle diesel multiple units of the former Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD for express and express train services.

history

Prototype M 286.0001 in the Railway Museum Lužná u Rakovníka (2016)

While the predecessor series M 240.0 was only intended for local traffic, a more powerful and more comfortable variant for express and express train traffic on the main routes should now be procured. The basic structure of the vehicle remained the same. However, the more powerful engine could no longer be installed under the floor, but was now located at one end of the vehicle in a separate engine room.

The first prototype of the new series was completed in 1962 at Vagonka Studenka as the M 283.1. Another prototype was built in 1963. The railcars received the new series designation M 286.0 in 1963. The series vehicles were delivered in two series in 1966 and 1967. The last two railcars, however, were already intended as prototypes for the further developed successor series M 296.1 , which was manufactured from 1967.

Some of the vehicles were still in use at the ČD and ŽSR / ZSSK in 2010. It can be assumed that the deployment will end in 2018. In any case, two vehicles are still drivable: the prototype car M 286.1001 and the M 286.1008. The latter is kept at the National Technical Museum in Prague and was seen in the Chomutov depot that same year .

The railcars received the 12-cylinder V-engine K 12 V 170 DR from ČKD , which has already proven itself in various series of ČSD . A three-converter fluid transmission of the type H 750 M manufactured by ČKD is used for power transmission. The axle drive is via cardan shafts and axle drives on two axles.

The further developed KS 12 V 170 DR engine with 515 kW was installed in the modernized vehicles of the later 851 series.
