The vehicles of the ČSD series M 485.0 were two-part diesel multiple units of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) for express train traffic . The vehicles were originally intended for the Turkish State Railways (TCDD); however, as a result of the events of the Second World War, they could not be extradited.

history

Four of these vehicles were manufactured by MAN in Nuremberg in 1943 . When they were to be transported to the Balkans around 1944 , trade relations between Turkey and Germany had broken off. Therefore, three units were sold to the First Slovak Republic as replacements . The fourth, damaged, unit was transported to Turkey after the war.

Due to the susceptibility of the diesel engine to failure, the originally available output of 420 hp had to be reduced to around 360 hp at an early stage. In addition, the lack of synchronization of the double mechanical drive system caused operational difficulties. Therefore, after 1945 there were no scheduled deployments of the units.

The M 485.003 unit, which was still in existence in 1956, was taken out of service in Praha Libeň and converted into an assembly car for railway electrification under the name EMV 53289 .

technical features

The railcar was designed as a double unit like the flying trains , with the difference that it was a double railcar with mechanical power transmission.

The drive system with the 12-cylinder diesel engine and the mechanical transmission of the Mylius type was housed in each of the outer motor bogies . The engine had to be throttled in performance early due to its susceptibility to failure, so that instead of 1500 rpm it only had a speed of 1300 rpm. As a result, the originally designed output of 420 hp and the speed of 120 km / h could not be achieved.

The gearbox was a 5-speed gearbox. While Mylius gears were common in railcars, it was a novelty for a multi-unit unit. The lack of synchronization of the units also turned out to be the case in test operations.

The car body was very elegant and had the luxury that is usual on flying trains . It offered a total of 119 seats for the passengers in a 2 + 2 arrangement. The heating was ensured by a hot water pipe through the diesel engine. There was a luggage compartment behind the machinery. The unit also had a buffet for drinks and cold dishes.
