The Ōta ( Japanese 太 田 川 , Ōta-gawa ) is a river in Japan .

The 103 km long river rises from the 1339  m high Kanmuri-yama ( 冠 山 , literally Kronberg ).

As the most important river in Hiroshima Prefecture, it drains an area of 1710 km² via numerous tributaries on the upper reaches. Thanks to its favorable gradient, it can be used by several hydropower plants. On its way through the prefecture, it flows through the cities of Kitahiroshima , Akiota , Akitakata and Higashihiroshima before flowing into the Seto Inland Sea in the Hiroshima area . In the Asakita-ku district, it joins the Tone and Misasa rivers .

Within Hiroshima, it first splits into the main arm Ōta drainage canal ( 太 田 川 放水 路 , Ōta-gawa hōsuiro ) and the side arm Alter Ōta ( 旧 太 田 川 , Kyū-Ōta-gawa ), also Honkawa ( 本 川 , "main river") ) called, on, and the latter then into the three arms Tenma ( 天 満 川 , -gawa ), Motoyasu ( 元 安川 , -gawa ), and Kyōbashi ( 京 橋 川 , -gawa ) from which the Enkō ( 猿猴 川 , - gawa ) branches off. The delta of the mouth therefore consists of 6 arms. The plain in which Hiroshima is located was raised by the Ōta.

On the Shiwaki , a tributary of the Ōta, is the well-known, 16-kilometer-long three-step gorge ( Sandan-kyō ).
