The Ōyūbari railway line ( Japanese 大 夕 張 鉄 道 線 , Ōyūbari-tetsudō-sen ) was a railway line in the center of the Japanese island of Hokkaidō . It belonged to the Mitsubishi concern and was in operation from 1911 to 1987.
description
The Cape Gauge route was 17.2 km long and was located entirely in the area of the city of Yūbari . In Shimizusawa station it branched off from the Yūbari branch line of the Sekishō line and led past the Shūparo reservoir to Ōyūbari-tanzan. The line was single-track and not electrified. It was mainly used to transport the hard coal mined in several mines , but also for forestry . In the stations of Tōhoro, Minami-Ōyūbari and Ōyūbari-tanzan there were connections to forest railways (all with a gauge of 762 mm). Passenger traffic was also of certain importance, especially since the road network was poorly developed for a long time.
history
The mining of coal on the upper reaches of the Yūbari-gawa began in 1898. The mining company Ōyūbari Tankō opened on June 1, 1911 the first section of the Ōyūbari railway line. It was 7.6 km long and connected Shimizusawa with Minami-Ōyūbari. In February 1916, the company was sold to the Mitsubishi concern, which also took over rail operations. Mitsubishi spun off its mining activities in April 1918 into the new subsidiary Mitsubishi Kōgyō (a forerunner of Mitsubishi Materials ). On June 1, 1922, this extended the railway line by a further 9.6 km to the terminus Ōyūbari-tanzan.
In the first three decades, the Ōyūbari railway line served exclusively for freight traffic. This changed on April 20, 1939 with the start of passenger traffic between Shimizusawa and Ōyūbari, with mostly mixed trains being used for this purpose . From December 25, 1953 on the entire route to Ōyūbari-tanzan. After the closure of the Ōyūbari mine, the section between Yūbari-tanzan and Minami-Ōyūbari was closed on December 16, 1973; at the same time, steam operation ended on the remaining section due to the introduction of diesel locomotives (DL-55 series from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries ).
Further rationalizations in the coal mines also led to the closure of the section between Shimizusawa and Minami-Ōyūbari on July 22, 1987. The elevation of the Ōyūbari dam in 2015 caused the water level of the Shuparo reservoir to rise; since then, a large part of the route north of Minami-Ōyūbari has been flooded. An association of railway enthusiasts receives several passenger and freight cars in the former Minami-Ōyūbari station.
