Šajkača

The Šajkača ( Serbian - Cyrillic шајкача ) is a traditional headgear of the national costume of the Serbs and as such a kind of national symbol . The mostly black or olive-colored hat is still worn by older Serbs in rural areas of central Serbia and is currently experiencing a revival . The striking thing about the Šajkača is the shape that resembles the letter V on the top of the hat.

history

It has its origins in the 18th century and was carried by the Šajkaši , the river boatmen on the Danube . Wearing the Šajkača became popular after the Serbian-Ottoman War at the end of the 19th century . In the Kingdom of Serbia , established in 1882 , the hat became the standard headgear for Serbian soldiers. Because this cap was not worn in any other army, it was an identification feature of the Serbian soldier. They are sometimes worn at ceremonial events or parades even today.
