Špancirfest

The Špancirfest is a street festival that has been held in Varaždin since 1999 and lasts 10 days every year. It starts in late August and ends in early September.

This street festival consists of several smaller festivals:

  • Comedy Festival (Comedies)
  • Hlapecfest (performances for children up to 14 years)
  • Moderatofest (concerts of classical music)
  • Jazzfest (jazz concerts)
  • Rhythm festival (rock, reggae, hip-hop and blues concerts)
  • Street festival (street artists, acrobats, street musicians, jugglers, puppet shows)

There is a wide range of concerts by local and international artists, performances, street art, souvenir shops and traditional handicrafts (including carpenters, potters, blacksmiths).

In 2003 the festival won the Eventum award in the category “The best city event and the best street decoration”.

Špancir Festival 2004

In 2004, 1000 artists from 11 European countries took part in the Špancirfest with 120 programs. 100,000 visitors came from Germany and abroad.

Špancir Festival 2005

The Špancirfest 2005 invited artists from 5 continents (Europe, Africa, Asia, USA and Australia). The festival was equipped with 4 stages on which 150 programs took place. 20 traditional craft workshops from all over Croatia presented themselves on the streets of Varaždin.

The festival cost the organizers 2.5 million euros, of which 1.5 million euros were spent on the program.

Špancir Festival 2006

The Špancirfest 2006 included 150 programs, 709 artists from 16 countries (Croatia, Austria, Slovenia, Belgium, Jamaica, Hungary, Germany, Cuba, Great Britain, Spain, Russia, Ukraine, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Portugal) and 5 stages in Citycenter.

Špancir Festival 2007

At the 2007 Špancir Festival, 1570 artists from 20 countries performed 276 programs. 7 stages were set up in the center of the city.

Artists who performed during the rhythm festival:

On August 28, 2007, Kristijan Petrović and Davor Dretar from VTV broke the record for continuous moderation that was previously held by American presenter Frank Morano with his station Staten Island Community Television in New York. They lasted for exactly 35 hours, 16 minutes and 31 seconds.
