ʻAtatā (also: Atata , Atataa ) is an inhabited island in the north of Tongatapu in the Pacific . Politically, it belongs to the Kingdom of Tonga . In 2006 the island had around 250 residents.

geography

The Motu is located on the northwestern edge of the archipelago and is one of the northernmost islands of Tongatapu. The island, together with Tufuka, forms the eastern edge of Maria Bay opposite Toketoke , while the Egeria Channel runs to the north . To the east lies the Sumner Shoal reef . The island itself has a peculiar ground plan: the northern part is relatively regular, round-oval, while to the south a headland is long, so that the shape of the island is reminiscent of a tadpole. In the northern part of the island is the Ata Estate plantation and on the elongated southern part is the settlement of the island with the Royal Sunset Resort . There is also a Mormon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints .

climate

The climate is tropical hot, but is tempered by constantly blowing winds. Like the other islands of the Tongatapu group, ʻAtatā is occasionally hit by cyclones .
