Before his accession to the throne, Ḫantili was cupbearer Muršilis and married his sister Ḫarapšili . So Ḫantili was not a descendant of Muršili, but held the rank of brother-in-law. Together with Zidanta I , Hantili then went on to implement Zidanta's plan to overthrow Muršili. What happened after Mursili's return is described in later records as follows:
Zidanta instigated the Ḫantili and they planned a bad thing, they went up to the palace. They murdered the Muršili and committed a bloody act.
Ḫantili has now new Great King, and went with an army to Carchemish , as the Hurrians repeatedly with military operations in sub-regions of Hatti invaded. It is not certain whether this campaign was a success. An unspecified affair about the Queen of Šukziya and her execution is also reported. Whether it was Ḫantili's wife remains unclear, as only the death of Ḫarapšili is known, but not the circumstances.
Telipinu only briefly described the situation: Ḫantili was afraid. As soon as he ruled as king, the gods haunted him for his bloody deed on Mursili . He must have ruled for several years after that, as we can read about his death: As soon as Ḫantili grew old and was about to become God, Zidanta I murdered his son Pišeni and his sons. He also murdered the chief of his servants (Zidanta I.) .
The mention of the murder of Pišeni and his sons allows a rough determination of the minimum term of government of Ḫantili, which must have existed for a longer period of time, since Zidanta I. Ḫantili's daughter married and held the rank of son-in-law.
