.biz is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) that was introduced on June 26, 2001 . It is primarily intended for registration by companies . The abbreviation biz phonetically corresponds to the first syllable of the English word business . The domain is administered by the US company NeuStar . The contract between the operator and ICANN expired on December 31, 2012 and was extended by six months at short notice due to the fact that negotiations on a new agreement had not been concluded.

introduction

This top-level domain was introduced due to the fact that an easy to remember and short .com domain can hardly be registered. The ICANN has .biz introduced in 2001 as one of the first top-level domains under the program for new generic TLDs. The gTLD .biz is managed by Neulevel , 90 percent of which is owned by Neustar .

Regardless of the public interest, .biz ranks among the less significant top-level domains. For example, it was overtaken in April 2006 by the ccTLD .eu .

properties

A .biz domain can be between two and 63 characters long. Since October 2004 it has also been possible to use internationalized domain names .

Until September 2009, domains with less than three digits were excluded. After easing the criteria, NeuStar has auctioned particularly valuable addresses with only one sign on the Sedo trading platform . The remaining addresses were written out as usual.
