.coop

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.coop is a generic top-level domain (gTLD). It was introduced on December 15, 2001 and is administered by DotCooperation based in Washington, DC . This is a subsidiary of the so-called National Cooperative Business Association , which has applied for the domain from ICANN . This was done as part of the liberalization of the generic address guidelines in 2000.

The ending .coop is an abbreviation for cooperatives , in German cooperatives . The top-level domain is intended exclusively for such companies and is rather insignificant compared to other generic addresses. One year after the introduction, the registry reported only 30 active websites under the domain. On June 20, 2003, about 7,500 addresses were registered; more recent figures are not available.

Due to the lack of success, the award criteria for .coop have been heavily liberalized over the years, most recently in 2008. Since then, it has been possible for cooperatives to register additional domains to set up categories. Discounts when ordering multiple domains are also unusual and are expressly provided by the .coop registry. Since December 2008, very short addresses that only consist of one or two characters have been assigned .
