.tel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.tel is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) that has existed since March 1, 2007 and is owned by the London company Telnic Ltd. is managed. In contrast to other domains, .tel addresses are not intended to make a website accessible, but solely to display the owner's contact details.

history

The introduction of .tel as the 19th generic domain was announced in March 2007. Subsequently, the Internet administration ICANN and the registry Telnic negotiated a contract in which there were mainly differences over the release of Whois data. This led to an almost one year delay in the launch of .tel.

The top-level domain was introduced on December 3, 2008. First, owners have registered trademarks in connection with the so-called sunrise period to secure their rights to new addresses before (named by 15 pm (GMT), the Public Procurement on 3 February 2009 Landrush Period ) was started. With almost all registrars , registration was initially only possible for a period of at least three years.

In the first two months, a total of around 200,000 .tel domains were registered, but the domain does not even come close to reaching the popularity of other generic endings such as .com , .net or .info . In the course of the opening of numerous addresses for pure numeric domains, there were several criticisms of .tel and Telnic, because the domain is actually no longer necessary and the obstruction of pure numeric domains was an essential criterion for the introduction of .tel.

properties

A .tel domain can be between three and 63 characters long. The use of special characters is possible, with the exception of the hyphen in the first, last, third and fourth positions. Since September 2013 it has also been possible to register domains that only contain numbers (so-called number domains ). However, the prerequisite is that they are at least eight instead of three characters long. In November 2013, the International Telecommunication Union expressed its concern about the legal implications of this change; such addresses may not be compatible with the E.164 standard.

A domain is connected in real time and only takes a few hours on average. In contrast to all other top-level domains, individual name servers can not be used due to the special function of .tel domains . However, this restriction has been lifted since March 13, 2017, which means that individual name servers can be used.

Owners of a .tel domain can store various information such as telephone numbers for telephone and fax, their e-mail address , address or the Skype name, which is then displayed to the visitor on a consistently designed page. Although the colors can be adjusted and since February 2011 you can also use your own images on a .tel page, the order of the contact details shown and the layout of the page cannot be changed. There is a specially optimized view of .tel websites for mobile devices such as smartphones .
