There are five residential buildings at 1–11 Nursery Buildings in the Scottish industrial estate of New Lanark in the South Lanarkshire Council Area . In 1971 they were included in the Scottish Monument Lists in the highest monument category A. The buildings are also part of the New Lanark World Heritage Site . The New Buildings row of buildings extends directly adjacent .

history

With the exception of the final building No. 10-11, the houses were built in 1809. The philanthropic factory owner Robert Owen had the row of buildings built to accommodate poor young apprentices who otherwise would have had to spend the night in one of the mill buildings. This original purpose can also be recognized by the fact that the buildings are the only ones in New Lanark to have an external spiral staircase at the rear. The residential units were accessible from the outside at all times. Around 1810 a shop was housed in one of the buildings to supply the settlement. The company managed it itself until 1933 and then leased it. The tea room and the post office continued to operate until 1990. In 1850 a bakery was added to the right (Nursery Buildings 10-11).

description

In contrast, they are only three-story and a total of seven axes wide. The entrances are accessible via short front stairs. The flanking windows of the former shop close with flat segmental arches . The former bakery on the right is one-story. Twin windows are arranged on the three window axes .

The masonry of the building consists of quarry stone from sandstone with contrasting natural stone details . There are twelve-part lattice windows installed. Finally, slate roofs sit on top .
