New Buildings

The New Buildings are a row of buildings in the Scottish industrial estate of New Lanark in the Council Area of South Lanarkshire . In 1971 they were included in the Scottish Monument Lists in the highest monument category A. The buildings are also part of the New Lanark World Heritage Site . Row 1–11 Nursery Buildings extends directly next to it .

history

In the mid-1780s, several one-story residential buildings were built on the site. In the 1790s these were demolished and replaced by today's New Buildings. When Robert Owen took over the plant , the row of buildings was expanded. On the upper floor, rooms for Gaelic-language services and a Sunday school were set up, which were used until 1898. The classical design was probably also created during this construction phase . Between 1825 and 1867 a roof turret with an open bell was installed. This previously crowned mill no.1 . The bell rang in the shift change.

The use of the New Buildings in 1903 has been handed down. This year they housed 18 two-room and 4 one-room apartments. While two rooms on the top floor were empty, washrooms and a doctor's practice were set up on the ground floor. The doctor's apartment was directly above. The row of buildings was restored around 1980.
