105 (also 105 Golden Arrow ) is the name of a road bike group from Shimano . The group has existed in a different form since 1983 and is considered the entry-level group for sporty racing cyclists. It is below the Ultegra or 600 and above cheaper groups such as Sora and Tiagra . The group was introduced in 1983 as 105 , from 1989 it was called 105 SC and since 1999 again 105 .

Today's standard of the group is the 11-speed gearshift and Hollowtech II bottom bracket or cranks (7000 series) (as of 2019).

Components

The group includes all components :

The components were compatible with all other Shimano groupsets until the introduction of 9-speed shifting technology. The 105 groups are compatible with other Shimano groups with the same shifting technology (9-speed, 10-speed, 11-speed).

history

The first version of the Shimano 105 racing bike group came onto the market in 1980. The first series was built as the Golden Arrow 105 . The number 105 was just an addition to the striking gold arrow embossed on the parts. The group attracted greater attention from 1986, when it was presented together with the newly developed Shimano shifting technology Shimano Indexed Shifting (SIS) and Shimano Linear Response (SLR) braking technology . It was introduced as a cheaper alternative to the 600 group and was based on the existing Exage 500EX entry- level group , expanded to include SIS and SLR. In both the 105 and the 600 group, Shimano produced a “Gold Arrow” version (Golden Arrow). The parts of both groups were very similar. In 1990 the group was replaced by the 105SC series.

The Shimano 105 Dual Pivot (two-joint brakes as opposed to single-joint brakes) were the first brake bodies that Shimano produced on a large scale with this better power transmission technology. At the beginning of the 2010s Shimanos 105 was continuously upgraded by the manufacturer and is today "a serious alternative to more expensive groupsets." ( Tour ) The components of the group are usually a little heavier than those of the Dura Ace and Ultegra groups .

For the 5800 series, which will be on the market from 2015, the key technologies of the established race groups Dura-Ace and Ultegra have been adopted. The 11-speed drive in the 105 group was one of the main innovations.

From 2015 Shimano expanded its range in the 105 class to include hydraulic disc brakes. The RS505 brake and the mechanical-hydraulic shift / brake lever (ST-RS505) are at the same level as the 105 group, but no longer received the group name. They are fully compatible with the higher groups with the same number of gears.

Many manufacturers equip their racing and cyclocross bikes with Shimano 105 from the factory. a. Drössiger , Müsing , Stevens u. a.
