13-18 Main Street (Port Charlotte)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At 13-18 Main Street , a row of six residential buildings can be found in the Scottish city of Port Charlotte on the Hebridean island of Islay . The buildings are in the city center on the east side of Main Street . On July 20, 1971, the buildings were included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B as an ensemble . The house names are occasionally used to specify the buildings . These are starting in the north: Mclellan (No. 13), Clark (No. 14), Kidd (No. 15), Gillies (No. 16), Mckinven (No. 17) and Rothschild (No. 18).

description

The six buildings were built as an enclosed construction along Main Street and take up the entire side of the street between Lower School Street in the south and Pier Road in the north. Across the street are the listed buildings of 75-80 Main Street . The houses dating from the early 19th century are all used as residential buildings. Buildings nos. 13, 14, 15 and 17 are externally built according to identical plans. In all cases there are two-story houses that end with slate-covered gable roofs . The entrance doors are located in the middle and are symmetrically surrounded by five lattice windows. The buildings are traditionally built on areas of around 10.5 × 8 m 2 each . The facades are mostly plastered using the traditional Harling technique. Since the bottom slopes towards the east coast of Loch Indaal , the buildings are lower than those on the opposite side of the street and the entrance doors are below street level. For this reason, short stairs lead from the street to the houses.
