description

These are two uniformly designed villas in closed construction. They were built for William Hamilton in 1890 . Hamilton was the uncle of Charles Rennie Mackintosh , who at the time was an apprentice to the architecture firm Honeyman & Keppie . Mackintosh designed the villa at his uncle's request, making it his earliest independently planned building. It was thematized in two monographs on Mackintosh. Hamilton sourced one of the two halves, which he named Redclyffe .

The two-story villas are on Balgrayhill Road in the northern Springburn district of Glasgow . The red masonry consists of roughly hewn blocks of different sizes with offset, polished details. On the street side, two distinctive, semi-octagonal illuminations emerge. A low-hanging eaves spans the two axes between the lobes. The entrance portals with architraves are located on the building flanks. The final roofs are covered with slate. A low wrought iron fence completes the property and separates the front gardens of both houses.
