The Black River (English for "black river") is an approximately 480 km long left tributary of the White River in the US states of Missouri and Arkansas .

The Black River arises in Reynolds County in southeast Missouri near Lesterville at the confluence of its source rivers East Fork and Middle Fork Black River . It initially flows in a south-southeast direction through the northeastern part of the Ozark Plateau . It is dammed up to Clearwater Lake . Later he passes the places Mill Spring and Williamsville . At Poplar Bluff the Black River reaches the Mississippi alluvial plain . He is now turning south-southwest and crossing the border into Arkansas. Near Pocahontas joins the Current River , near Black Rock the Spring River , 30 km upstream of the mouth of Strawberry River in the Black River, all right. The Black River and its tributaries drain the southeast flank of the Ozark Plateau. Another town on the lower Black River is Powhatan . The Black River finally flows into the White River at Jacksonport . The Black River has a multitude of river loops on its way through the Mississippi alluvial plain .

The Davidsonville Historic State Park is located south of Pocahontas on the right bank. At the East Fork Black River there is a dam that dams the Lower Taum Sauk Lake .

The Black River drains an area of about 22,000 km². 4546 km² of this is in Missouri. At the Elgin Ferry gauge about 25 km above the estuary, the mean discharge is 281 m³ / s.
