history

The first courthouse was built in 1855 and was destroyed by a tornado in 1927 . The courthouse, built in neo-classical style in 1928, is still used as such today. In 1994 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
Rodgers Theater Building
Rodgers Motion Picture Theater opened on June 1, 1949 in the town of Poplar Bluff. It's an example of late Art Deco architecture. When it opened, it was considered the most modern movie theater between St. Louis and Memphis . In the auditorium, it had 1,160 seats with red plush armchairs that hugged the body, 20 of which were equipped with hearing aids. The movie theater was heated and cooled by air conditioning. There was a separate soundproof screaming room next door, in which parents and their young children could watch the film through a soundproof glass pane without disturbing the audience in the auditorium. In the later years the large auditorium was replaced by two smaller auditoriums. After a multiplex cinema opened in the neighborhood , Rodgers Lichtspielhaus closed on May 14, 1998. The building became the property of Butler County in January 1999 . Concerts have been held occasionally since 2007 , and Butler County's first floor space is used as office space.
