14 Wellington Square
A public building is located at 14 Wellington Square in the Scottish town of Ayr in the South Ayrshire council area . In 1971 it was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. In addition, it forms a category B monument ensemble with two surrounding building complexes. The public tender in November 1817 was won by the then 27-year-old architect Robert Wallace from London . The building was constructed between 1818 and 1822.
description
The building is part of an administrative complex for the city of Ayr across from Wellington Square near the banks of the Firth of Clyde . It houses the sheriff's office and the persons in his area of responsibility as well as a court.
The two-storey building is designed in a classical style. It is eleven axes wide, which are grouped according to the pattern 4–3–4. The masonry is made of polished ashlar. The facades are designed with all-round cornices . The east-facing front is adorned with a portico with four Ionic columns and a triangular pediment . The central entrance portal is suspected of having a protruding cornice. Arched windows with keystones are installed on the ground floor, while elongated lattice windows with simple cornices can be found on the upper floor . The roof is hidden behind a surrounding balustrade . However, the central dome with a glazed lantern remains visible . Both the eight axis wide side facades and the eight axis wide rear facade are designed in the style of the front.
