The 1er régiment étranger de parachutistes ( 1er REP ) (1st alien regiment of paratroopers) was an airborne regiment of the French Foreign Legion . It existed from 1948 to 1961.

history

The regiment was set up as a battalion near Sidi Bel Abbès in Algeria in 1948 . The association fought in the Indochina War and the Algerian War . In 1955 the association was expanded into a regiment .

During the Algerian War , the unit stationed in Algeria took part in the coup against Charles de Gaulle on the orders of its officers in 1961 and was disbanded after the crackdown. At the time of the coup, the regiment was provisionally commanded by Commandant Hélie Denoix de Saint-Marc, since the actual commander, Lieutenant Colonel Guiraud, was in France for recreation.

Some members of the association deserted and joined the OAS .
