2nd Symphony (Kochan)

The . Symphony No. 2 is one of the most important symphonies of Günter Kochan (1930-2009). It was created in 1968 and was premiered on February 21, 1969 on the occasion of the 2nd  Berlin Music Biennale . The work has a playing time of about 16 minutes.

1 piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (B-flat), 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns (F), 2 trumpets (C), 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, piano, percussion for 3 players (snare drum, stirrer drum , 2 tom tom, 2 bongos, wooden drum, 2 temple blocks, hanging cymbal, tam-tam, bass drum, xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone), 1st and 2nd violins, violas, cellos and double basses.

Emergence

The symphony was dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). However, it does not contain a narrative plot with state-supporting motifs. Stylistically, the work is based on neo-classical music with references to the twelve-tone music by Arnold Schönberg . Kochan's work was very close to Dmitri Shostakovich and was influenced by Aram Khachaturian in the final .

premiere

The composition was premiered in 1969 by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Kurt Sanderling .

According to his own statements from the 1970s, his second symphony was then performed around 25 times.
