The 2nd Guards MotSchützendivision , in short, the second GMSD , ( Russian 2-я гвардейская мотострелковая Таманская ордена Октябрьской Революции Краснознамённая ордена Суворова дивизия имени М. И. Калинина (2 гв мсд). ) Is a major unit of the Russian land forces .
This division was set up on July 8, 1940 in Kharkov . During the Second World War , she fought in the Kerch-Eltigen operation in the reconquest of the Crimea with an amphibious landing from the Taman peninsula and has been nicknamed "Tamanskaya" ever since.
The division has been stationed near Moscow since Soviet times and is one of the best-equipped large formations of Russian motorized rifle troops .
