A large dog (colloquially also 20/40 dog or 40/20 dog ) is a term in the dog law for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for dogs that weigh at least 20 kg when fully grown or are at least 40 cm tall ( height at the withers ). The state of Brandenburg also makes provisions for such dogs in its dog owner ordinance, although no special designation is used for them in the ordinance.

North Rhine-Westphalia

Paragraph 3 defined large dogs as those that “reach a height at the withers of at least 40 cm or a weight of at least 20 kg”. In its deliberations on the draft on June 10, 2011, the Interior Committee rejected the classification of large dogs as dangerous animals, and large dogs continue to be "not considered dangerous by law".
