The Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı (Turkish, German holiday of national sovereignty and the child , also 23 Nisan Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı , 23 Nisan means April 23 ) has been an official holiday and children's day in Turkey and the Turkish Republic since 1921 Northern Cyprus . It is also dedicated to Turkish national sovereignty and was introduced to commemorate the opening of the National Assembly and the constitution of the country's first free parliament on April 23, 1920 under the state founder MK Ataturk . He dedicated that day to the children under the motto Our children are our future ( Çocuklarımız geleceğimizdir ).

The 23rd Nisan Children's Festival is the largest children's festival of its kind. All children, regardless of nationality, regardless of culture, ethnicity and religion, should come together on this day and celebrate with one another. The aim of the events is to promote children's rights internationally and to achieve peaceful coexistence; the festival aims to promote brotherhood, love and friendship between children.

Since 1979, the holiday has been given the extended title International Children's Festival and is also celebrated in other countries.

Around 30,000 children from 118 nations have taken part in the children's festival for 37 years now.

Celebrations in Turkey

There are street parades and celebrations in stadiums. Every year groups of children from abroad are invited to Turkey, who then take part in the celebrations in traditional costumes from their home countries. The celebrations take place annually under the motto of the founding father Ataturk "Peace in the country, peace in the world". The organization of the parades and celebrations lies with the Turkish radio and television broadcaster TRT .

The 38th International Children's Festival 2016 took place from April 18th to 30th at the Expo exhibition center in Antalya. During the celebrations, children from around 40 countries presented dance performances to their national music in traditional robes. Afterwards, various excursions took place, including to the Turkish mausoleum Anıtkabir Ataturk, which dedicated April 23 as a children's festival .

Celebrations in Germany

Turkish Children's Festival 2007 in Uetersen

On April 23, various Turkish associations that arose in the course of immigration from Turkey to the Federal Republic of Germany are holding celebrations on the occasion of Child's Day . While some festivals are only aimed at Turkish children, intercultural children's festivals have been organized in many places since 1994 , which emphasize the original idea of international understanding . These international children's festivals are organized in cooperation with German child and youth work institutions as well as with other migrant associations in Berlin and Stuttgart, among others.

Berlin

The children's festival was held in Berlin for the first time in 2000. It stretches from the Brandenburg Gate to Yitzhak-Rabin-Straße. According to media reports, there were hundreds of thousands of visitors in 2007. The program on the main stage in front of the Brandenburg Gate has been presented for several years by the children's section of ZDF and the children's channel KiKA with the participation of numerous stars from the program.

The children's festival is organized here by a voluntary working group made up of over 60 clubs and umbrella organizations. This working group depends on the financial support of sponsors and donations. The organizer, 23 Nisan e. V. , attaches great importance to the fact that all efforts are in the interests of the children of society and that no commercial or political purposes are pursued.

The activities include a stage on which children from all cultures can demonstrate their skills. Other activities include a children's Olympics, a painting competition and a soccer tournament. The two festive days with the motto a happy togetherness are not only exciting for the children, but also offer a great variety for the adults.
