2 minus 1 vej

2 minus 1 vej at Allerum , Sweden

2 minus 1 vej , also 2 ÷ 1 vej (Eng. Two-minus-one-way ), is a newly introduced type of side road in Denmark that combines lanes for motor vehicles , cyclists and pedestrians . In Switzerland the corresponding road type is called the core carriageway .

The narrow roadway is supplemented on both sides by an interrupted marking comparable to the protective strip. Since there is only one lane, a central guideline is missing . In the case of oncoming traffic, vehicles must switch to the bicycle and pedestrian lane on the right; the bicycle and pedestrian traffic there always has priority. The bicycle lane may only be used by vehicles to avoid them.

Initial evaluations in 2012 showed that two-minus-one ways increased bicycle traffic in an area by up to 50 percent. At the same time, the average speed of the cars decreased significantly, which was seen as an improvement in road safety. Third, maintenance costs decreased compared to simple back roads with separate cycle paths.

A "2 minus 1 vej" is often provided with additional traffic calming measures , for example speed bumps (Danish: bump ). The maximum permissible speed can be limited to 40 or 50 km / h.
