Core roadway

Core carriageway in Münchenstein

In Switzerland, a core carriageway is a street that has a cycle lane on both sides , but no guideline in the middle. In certain situations, it increases road safety for cyclists, as the car driver no longer fixes on the guideline in the middle of the lane and thus passes far too close to the cyclist.

If there is no cyclist in sight, you can ride on the right edge of the cycle lane. When overtaking, you tend to avoid the middle of the road than if there were a guideline there. A possible oncoming vehicle still has enough space thanks to the cycle lane on its side.

Core lanes are mainly used on main and secondary roads, 2nd class . Since 2016, core lanes have only been allowed in urban areas.
