34th Symphony (Michael Haydn)

Michael Haydn composed his Symphony No. 34 in E flat major MH 473 (Perger 26) in 1788.

General

Symphony No. 34 is characterized by the following features:

  • Appearance of a bassoon solo in the second movement and high notes for the first horn in the final movement
  • polyphonic technique in the final movement ( fugato )

To the music

Instrumentation: two oboes , two horns in E-flat and B-flat, two violins , viola , cello , double bass . To reinforce the bass voice, the bassoon and harpsichord (if available in the orchestra) were used without separate notation , although there are different opinions in the literature about the involvement of the harpsichord.
Performance time: approx. 9-10 minutes.

1st movement: Allegro con brio

E flat major, 4/4 time, 97 bars
The movement is written in the form of a sonata without repetitions.

2nd movement: Adagietto

B flat major, 3/4 time, 44 bars
Simple two-part form, with low notes in the trumpets.

3rd movement: Finale-Fugato. Allegro

E flat major, 2/2 time, 182 bars, mixture of fugue and early sonata form: Fugato
The unison main motif of the movement is based on the main motif of the first movement.
