The 39M Csaba was a Hungarian armored scout vehicle during the Second World War , which was based on various British designs.

development

The 39M Csaba was designed by the Hungarian engineer Nikolaus Straussler , who had been a British citizen since 1933 and who had already designed vehicles for Alvis Cars and Vickers-Armstrong in the interwar period . Well-known predecessors are the “Strausser AC-I” (1934), “Strausser AC-II” (1935) and “Strausser AC-III” (1936). The 39M Csaba was manufactured in the Hungarian factory Manfréd Weiss Stahl- und Metallwerke AG .

production

After initial tests in 1939, the Hungarian Army ordered 81 M39 vehicles and another 40 M40 vehicles (command vehicle). Of these vehicles, 20 were used as combat vehicles, while the others served as reconnaissance vehicles. Production was suspended due to a lack of production capacity in Hungary and should be resumed later.

technology

An 8-cylinder engine made in Cologne with an output of 90 hp was used as the drive . This enabled the 39M Csaba to reach a road speed of up to 65 km / h, which was considered to be progressive at the time.

variants

Another version of the 39M Csaba was the 40M Csaba , which was used as a command car. This only had a MG as armament and had an additional R-4T radio installed.
