Godwi and Godwine
Godwi and Godwine is a fragment of a comedy by Clemens and Bettina Brentano . After January 11, 1802, no further work was probably carried out on it.
content
Julie has asthenia . According to John Brown , "strange things are supposed to stir up," they say. The young physician Dr. Wissefeld, a disciple of Brown, has a remedy for that disease: love. He does not meet with love. In conversation Julie said to another woman: "I am not in a position to love the Herr Doctor, and if I were I would not do it that way."
Godwi, always insulting and direct, stages an intrigue with his lover Godwine. "I want to fall in love with your lover and bite her out," he says cheekily to the Doctor. While Godwi is actually playing a little love affair with Julie for the doctor who “suffers from the heart”, the coquettish Godwine pretends to be sick. As a patient, she wants to ensnare Doctor Wissefeld and thus heal from his love. Here the fragment breaks off. We don't know how the Doctor who has "too much heart for a doctor" will react to the intrigue. At least he says at the end: “Death, life without plan” when he has to watch Julie Godwi shamelessly kissing at the window. The question of the relationship between the eponymous couple is neglected. After the scene at the window, Godwi raves in front of Godwine: "... oh the heavenly girl, have I finally found the soul that suffices for me oh Julie - Julie!" Godwine is strange.
Quotes
- "Only he who is bigger is great."
- The name Godwi is commented on: "Yes, the strange gentleman - I think his name is like God,"
reception
- According to Schultz, the comedy has nothing to do with “ Godwi ” . When Brentano was studying in Jena in 1798 , he wanted to become a doctor. Schultz speculates that Brentano is referring to Schelling's Romantic Medicine .
