Hartwig Schultz (born January 9, 1941 in Dortmund ) is a Germanist. The editor and professor of German literature became known as a Brentano researcher.

Schultz, who grew up in Hanover, studied German and English in Berlin. He spent two semesters in Vienna and Göttingen. Schultz received his doctorate from the Free University of Berlin with “On the rhythm of modern poetry. Parallel verse structures in Holz , George , Rilke , Brecht and the Expressionists ” . The dissertation was published in Munich in 1970. Schultz completed his habilitation with the work “Form als Inhalt” (see first entry under “Works”). Research, supported by grants from the Thyssen Foundation and the DFG , followed the above-mentioned academic years. From 1974 to 2007, Schultz was in charge of the Brentano office at the Freie Deutsche Hochstift (Frankfurt Goethe Museum ). During these three and a half decades, 32 of the approximately 63 volumes of the historically critical Clemens Brentano edition of all works and letters were published. On October 3, 1991, Schulz founded the Freundeskreis Schloss Wiepersdorf with Clara von Arnim, of which he was chairman until 2013.
