Michael Scheffel

Michael Scheffel (born February 27, 1958 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German literary scholar and university professor, professor of modern German literary history and general literary studies.

Life

After graduating from high school in Frankfurt , Scheffel studied German , Romance studies and art history in Tübingen , Tours and Göttingen . After obtaining his doctorate in Göttingen in 1988, he was a research assistant at the university there and qualified as a professor in 1995 in German studies. Since 2002 he has been Professor of General Literary Studies and Modern German Literary History at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal . Together with Wolfgang Lukas, Scheffel heads the Wuppertal office of the in cooperation with the University of Cambridge (UK), the Cambridge University Library and the German Literature Archive Marbach as well as with the competence center for electronic indexing and publication processes in the humanities of the University of Trier and funded in the academy program Research project "Arthur Schnitzler: Digital historical-critical edition (works 1905 to 1931)" (www.arthur-schnitzler.de).

Scheffel has worked as a visiting lecturer and professor at the universities of Birmingham , Coimbra , Dublin , Frankfurt / Main , Lisbon , Pécs , Beijing and Szeged , among others . From 1987 to 1997 he worked regularly for the features section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Süddeutsche Zeitung as well as the literary department of the Norddeutscher Rundfunk. Since 1991 he has been editor of the magazine Text + Criticism , since 2005 co-editor of the series of publications on literary studies (WVT) and general literary studies and since 2012 co-editor of Diegesis. Scheffel is a founding member of the Center for Narrative Research (ZEF) and has been Vice-Rector for Research, Third- Party Funding and Graduate Funding at the Bergische Universität since autumn 2008 .

Michael Scheffel is the son of Gerda Scheffel and Helmut Scheffel and the brother of Tobias Scheffel .
