The 3 Essen was the name given to the three chimneys of the gas turbine power plant GTKW (the two thick ones) and heating plant HW-Nord in Gera , which was built in 1976 and which is used to generate steam for the industry in the north of Gera (concrete plant, Wema Union, chemical plant, dairy and industrial bakery) and the supply of the new development area Bieblach Ost and the city with district heating.

The 3 Essen were built in the 1970s as a very modern gas turbine power plant and heating plant powered by heating oil , but in the course of the so-called change in energy sources (conversion of previously oil-fired systems to lignite as a result of the oil export cuts in the Soviet Union to the GDR), the heating plant was still under construction until 1988 converted to lignite, plant 2 with three coal boilers and then plant 3 with five coal boilers. The 3 Essen were with a height of 225 m, together with the Jena thermal power station , the tallest structure in Thuringia . The gas turbine power plant (operated with heating oil B) was used to generate peak loads of a maximum of 180 MW of electrical energy (6 gas turbine units with planned waste heat boilers). The additional heating plant was originally planned for operation with heating oil D, but was not completed as the change of energy source to lignite had priority. In the end, 3 + 5 40 t steam / h vibrating moving grate boilers with downstream electrostatic precipitators were available. It was supplied to the Bad Köstritz chemical plant (12 bar) and the city of Gera, especially Bieblach-Ost. So almost only the narrow forge could be seen in operation. An extraordinarily strong gas turbine operation began on January 14, 1987, when the Boxberg power plant was missing 1000 MW of electrical power for months due to an accident in the 13/14 twin-unit unit. At that time, energy was allocated in Gera companies; some day-shift companies had to work three shifts in order to be able to use the contingent energy optimally. In 1996 the chimneys were shut down because a new combined cycle power plant had started operation instead of the power plant previously fired with lignite . They became a kind of landmark of Gera, as they could be seen from the A4 as a memorable landmark.

In July 2008 the decision was made to demolish the 3 Essen . The gutting of the chimneys began in August 2008, and the individual segments were removed from February 2009. The demolition was completed in December 2010. The sister power plants in Zschornewitz and Vockerode no longer exist either. Due to its valley location, Gera was the only one of the three identical GTKW to have these high chimneys.

A graphic representation of the three chimneys was used as the logo for the textile brand 3ESSEN .
