The 42-line field gun M1877 ( Russian 42-линейная осадная пушка образца 1877 года ) was a field gun of the Imperial Russian Army . It was used in the Russo-Japanese War , World War I , Finnish Civil War , Russian Civil War, and the Winter War .
history
The gun was a design by the Krupp company and was produced in the Obuchow works in Saint Petersburg .
Soon after it was put into operation, it turned out that the 42-line field gun was only partially operational. The reason was the lack of equipment for indirect firing and so the gun could only be used in direct aiming. For this reason, the 42-line field gun was increasingly used as fortress artillery, especially for coastal protection, as direct fire was easily possible here.
In 1918 the Finnish Army captured 102 42-line field guns and took them over to its armed forces. The last shots with a 42-line field gun were fired during the Winter War in March 1940.
description
The 42-line gun had a Krupp-typical, horizontally movable, robust breech block. It could fire 12.5 kg high explosive (HE) or shrapnel grenades from a distance of up to 5300 meters. The gun had a weight of 1213 kg.
The 42-line field gun M1877 is not to be confused with the 42-line siege gun M1877 , a siege gun with greater firepower and range, but also with greater weight.
