The 42-line siege gun M1877 ( Russian 42-линейная корпусная и осадная пушка образца 1877 года ) was a siege gun of the Imperial Russian Army . It was used in the Russo-Japanese War , World War I , Finnish Civil War , Russian Civil War, and World War II .

history

Of the Japanese in the Battle of Nanshan captured 42-line guns are against their former owners in the Battle of Liaoyang used

The gun was a design by the Krupp company and was based on earlier designs of 105 mm guns. When the gun was presented to Russian officers, this was a favor, but it was to be adjusted to 107 mm, the traditional caliber of 42 lines . The gun was then produced in the Obukhov arsenal in Russia until 1903 .

Although the gun was designed in 1880, it received the addition of Model 1877 (M1877) , which can be traced back to the introduction of a new twist system in 1877.

Among other things, the 42-line siege gun M1877 was used in the Russo-Japanese War , for example in the Battle of Nanshan . The Japanese won the battle and captured numerous 42-line siege guns, which they later used against the Russians due to the lack of heavy artillery.

Some 42-line siege guns were used in Montenegro until World War I. Finland even used the guns well into World War II.

During the First World War, the German Army was able to capture a number of 42-line artillery pieces and with them set up nine Landwehr battalions of foot artillery , distributed over 22 batteries.

description

The 42-line gun had a Krupp-typical, horizontally movable, robust wedge block breech. It could fire high explosive (HE) or shrapnel grenades weighing 15.6 kg when the tube was raised to 40 ° at a distance of up to 9600 meters. The muzzle velocity was 543 m / s.

In the picture at the top right you can see a device on the wheels, which serves to intercept the recoil of the gun.

The 42-line siege gun M1877 should not be confused with the 42-line field gun M1877 , which, as a field gun, had a lower weight, but also lower firepower and range.
