' 420 A Millardet et de Grasset' is a base for the biotechnological control of the roots of phylloxera for grape varieties susceptible to phylloxera. It belongs to the group of Vitis berlandieri × Vitis riparia hybrids and is very tolerant of lime, but the yield and quality of the noble variety are deteriorated.

Ampelographic features

  • Shoot tip: closed to half-open, with whitish woolen hair, bordered by carmine red
  • Young leaves: slightly bronzed and very shiny
  • Full-grown leaves: upper side dark green, underside pale green, shiny, very thick, heart-shaped, three-lobed, slightly cupped; Stalk bay: lyra to open U-shaped
  • Shoots: dark green with typical reddish purple knots
  • Flower: male pseudo-hermaphrodite

Properties - use

The growth is weak to medium strong, unfortunately the rooting capacity is low. It has an unfavorable effect on the yield and quality and the vines are prone to waterlogging in spring. It is very tolerant of lime.

Is suitable for loose, shallow or deep, rather dry, stony, hot limestone soils in precocious locations.
